Consumer Protection and Competition Laws Awareness Program
On February 18, 2025, an "Awareness Program on Consumer Protection and Competition Laws" was held at the Southern Shan State Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SSSCCI) hall in Taunggyi, Southern Shan State.
State Minister for Economic Affairs, U Khun Thein Maung, delivered the opening speech, stating:
"With the development of Myanmar's market economy, businesses, including foreign investments, are expanding, and the number of private enterprises is increasing, leading to heightened market competition. Among them, some businesses are producing and distributing low-quality products, advertising with misleading information, overpricing goods, and engaging in irresponsible practices regarding products and services. Therefore, the Consumer Protection Law and Competition Law have been enacted. We urge all businesses to comply with these laws and operate responsibly."
During the program, Daw Ei Shwe Sin, Assistant Director of the Myanmar Competition Commission Office, explained the emergence, drafting, and enactment of the Competition Law. Dr. Thuta Aung, an economist and Commission member of Myanmar Competition Commission, discussed the benefits and challenges of the Competition Law, while U Shwe Phyu, Deputy Director of the Department of Consumer Affairs, provided insights into the Consumer Protection Law.
Following the presentations, attendees raised questions regarding consumer protection and Myanmar's competition laws, which were addressed through discussions with the relevant officials.
The "Consumer Protection and Competition Laws Awareness Program" was attended by the State Minister for Economic Affairs, departmental officials from government agencies and organizations, representatives from business associations, and businesses from Shan State.
